In Art and Maths we are learning about the different shapes around us. How can we distinguish between a 2D shape or a 3D shape?

• 2D shapes are flat, have corners and sides.
• 3D shapes are solid, have vertices, edges and faces.

We use tools and machines everyday. Simple machines have one or two parts. Some simple machines are called tools. 

Complex machines have more than two parts. Some complex machines need electrical energy to walk. 

MATHS- MASS AND VOLUME

 MASS 

In this unit we are learning to measure mass in grams and in kilograms and to compare masses (greater than/ less than/ heavier than/lighter than; The heaviest/the lightest). 

VOLUME 

We will also learn to find the capacity of containers in litres and in millilitres and to compare capacities.

NATURAL SCIENCE- UNIT 5- MATTER AND MATERIALS

Paper, metal, plastic, cotton, glass and wood are different types of materials. 

Natural materials come from plants, animals or the ground. Man-made materials are made by humans.

Wood is a natural material. Plastic is a man-made material.

Materials have different properties: hard/soft, opaque/transparent, rigid/flexible... Metal is attracted to magnets.

Some materials float and some sink. Waterproof materials don´t let any water through.

Mass, volume and mixtures 

Objects and materials have mass and volume. 

Mixtures can be homogeneous or heterogeneous. 

We can change materials by heating, cooling or bending them. 

We can combine different materials to make things.  Our houses are made from different materials.

We use different materials for different things.
